High Severe Weather Risk

Kaufman County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie forwarded this info from the National Weather Service... Be prepared and be careful, folks.

The ingredients for a significant severe weather outbreak continue to come
together this morning, and we expect severe thunderstorms to develop across
western North Texas after 3 pm and move across much of
North Texas during the late afternoon and evening hours. While the
threat of severe weather exists over most of North Texas, the area of
greatest threat exists along and north of Interstate 20. All types of
severe weather will be likely today, including tornadoes, very large hail,
and damaging downburst winds. Long-track, strong tornadoes are
possible. In addition, localized flash flooding will be possible. A
multimedia web briefing will be available shortly on our web page, and a
graphic is attached depicting the threat areas today and tonight.

OVERVIEW/TIMING...An intensifying surface low pressure system over the
northern Texas Panhandle will move northeast as a powerful upper level storm
system moves across the southern and central plains states later today. The
atmosphere over North Texas is already very unstable and with daytime
heating the instability will only increase. The dryline, located over West
Texas this morning, will move east and serve as the focusing mechanism for
thunderstorm development by mid to late afternoon. This is expected to
occur roughly near or just west of a line from Olney to Eastland, Comanche
and Goldthwaite. Thunderstorms should become severe quickly and move
northeast at 35 to 40 mph, posing a challenge for mobile storm spotters. As
often occurs with supercell storms, the initial storm will split into two
storms, one that slows and turns to the right (east), and a left-moving
storm that then accelerates to the north-northeast and poses a very large
hail threat. Conditions today will favor a few splitting storms, and
spotters and emergency managers should be prepared for possible complex
storm evolutions for local warning purposes.

With time, initially isolated thunderstorms should merge into one or more
lines of storms while continuing to move northeast tonight. The primary
severe weather threat will then become damaging straight-line winds, with
tornadoes and large hail still possible. Rainfall may locally exceed 1 to 2
inches and will pose a risk of flash flooding.

On Wednesday, thunderstorms will be possible across eastern North Texas,
mainly to the east of I-35. There will be some threat for severe storms,
although the details are still uncertain and will be influenced by storms
today.

CONFIDENCE...Confidence in severe storm development today is high, and
moderate on the location of initial storm development. We will refine this
forecast throughout the day.

We will launch a special balloon sounding at 1230 pm to sample the pre-storm
environment. The Storm Prediction Center will upgrade northern portions of
North Texas to a High Risk later this morning and extend the moderate risk
area a bit farther south.

Thunderstorms starting in Terrell, severe weather expected by 12:10 p.m.

7-on-7 Football Schedule Released

Terrell will have two teams a summer 7-on-7 football league being hosted at Kaufman High School.

Games will get under way June 7 with each team playing two contests each scheduled game night. All games will be played in Kaufman with some at Lions Field and others on practice fields.

Terrell's No. 1 team is set to kick off the season at 6 p.m. June 7 against Scurry-Rosser while their second game of that evening will begin at 7 p.m. against Terrell team No. 2.

The Terrell team No. 2 is slated to open against Mabank at 6 p.m. June 7. Their second game of that evening will begin at 7 p.m. against Terrell team No. 1.

Teams playing in the league include two from Terrell, two from Kaufman, Scurry-Rosser, Mabank, Palmer and Eustace.

Time to buy into the Mavericks?

Dallas- Walking into American Airlines Center before last Sunday's Western Conference 2nd Round Series between the Mavericks and Lakers, you got two unmistakable feelings.

The first one was that undeniable end of line feeling for the Lakers. They were not winning in Game 4 much less coming back to win the series as some people thought.

The second feeling was one of a city buying back into to a team after years of frusteration and heartbreak. Quite frankly, the Mavericks gave them a reason to jump off with their early Spring flameouts the last four years but also gave them a reason to buy back in with their play over the first two rounds of this Spring.

Once a trendy first round upset pick, your Dallas Mavs are now the favorite to get out of the West after the dismantling the two time defending champions. And who is to argue they cannot be playing the first few weeks of June especially when Dallas drills a franchise record 20 three pointers as they did on Sunday.

There is something different about this Dallas team that you saw back in the regular season but you needed to see it again the playoffs just to make sure your eyes were not seeing a mirage again.

It was a commitment to defense and new found resiliency and toughness that has been lacking in the playoffs in recent years.

He also credits the turnaround to "embracing defense" which is what determines advancing in the playoffs or going home. The acquisition of eraser Tyson Chandler reinforced this this commitment last summer.

In the four games against Los Angeles, Dallas held the vaunted Lakers attack to 94, 81, 92 and 86 points in the four games. That is a far cry from the days of trying to outscore the opponent.

It also says something that some teams were trying to avoid the Lakers in the playoffs while the Mavs were winning games trying not to avoid them.

Carlisle said as much after the game that his team wanted the Lakers.

"They were multiple teams who were trying to avoid the possibility of LA in the second round and we were not one of them," Carlisle said. "We thought we were better off playing them in the second round than in the Western Conference Finals. We wanted the momentum of winning games."

Now, the Mavs have their best shot to win a World Championship since 2006 and it is the the three D's that are going to take them there. Defense, Dirk and determination.

The 32 year old Nowitzki has raised his game to another level if that was even possible. He not only is getting himself shots but he is getting his teammates open shots as well. It also helps when Jason Terry is playing the best basketball of his career.

The Mavs are a veteran bunch with playoff experience and past failures, which may have made them tougher for this current run.

This run is not bad for a team many thought would not even make it out of the first round.

The ride is only beginning Mavs fans and it promises to get a lot more entertaining. It is time to buy back in.

Forney holding strong in softball

While North Forney fell this weekend in an epic three game series against defending 3A champion Paris North Lamar, Forney defeated Royse City to advance to the 4A Regional Semi-Finals.

Forney will now face Frisco Wakeland in a best of three format that will take place at Plano West High School. Game 1 will be 7:30 p.m., Thursday while Game 2 will be 7:30 p.m., Friday. The if necessary Game 3 would be Noon Saturday.

15-4A baseball playoffs taking shape

Two District 15 baseball playoffs remain in the playoffs after two more teams fell last weekend.

Waxahachie continued their hot streak with a series victory over Sherman last weekend. They will face Hallsville in a best of three format starting on most likely Thursday.

This is the second district team Hallsville will be facing after they disposed of Forney last weekend in a best of three series.

District champion Mesquite Poteet marched on with a series win over Whitehouse last weekend. They will face Texas High, who defeated Red Oak last weekend in a best of three series.

Game 1 will be 7:30 p.m., Thursday while Game 2 is 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Game 3 would 2 p.m., Saturday. All three games are set to be played at Longview High School.

NFHS softball season ends in playoffs

The magical ride of the North Forney softball season came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Paris North Lamar in the do or die game Game 3 of the series.

The Lady Falcons managed only four hits as Shelby Hedrick took the tough luck on the mound.

The defending state 3A softball champion, North Lamar rallied to win back to back games with their season on the line after dropping a 7-4 decision in Forney on Thursday night.

The Lady Falcons finish the season at 30-9 and return every starter from this year's team for next season.

Forney's Hodge needs to stay within self

There will be five athletes representing Kaufman County this weekend at the State Track Meet in Austin this weekend.

Two are from Forney High School and three are from Kaufman High School.

Representing Forney will be Kris Hodge and Kara Hyde. Hodge will be running the 110 meter hurdles and Hyde will be running the 100 meter hurdles.

The fact that Hodge advanced to Austin is not a surpries in the eyes of Forney boys track coach Kent Smtih.

"I thought Kris had the ability to be a state meet caliber athlete since his junior year," Smith said. "He just so happened to run in a region that two kids from Lancaster who ran the two fastest times in the nation."

Smith said Hodge "took advantage of the situation" when the two Lancaster runners graduated last year.

Hodge's top performance this year in the 110 meter hurdles has been 14.21 seconds. Smith feels if Hodge duplicates that time "he should bring back the gold."

Smith said the two keys for Hodge will be to "get out of the blocks" and to "stay sound in his technique" throughout the race.

Represneting Kaufman will be Edwin Munoz is a four seed in the mile run for Kaufman. Jade Jacquez is the number two seed in the 800 meter run. Christina Harris will be seeded fifth in the Discus.

The State Track Meets will be Friday and Saturday at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.

Powder Puff Cancelled

The Powder Puff football game between junior/senior girls has been cancelled for Friday night.

The event was set to benefit Athletics Secretary Lucy Hessel and to help her get back on her feet.

The game was set to begin 5 p.m., Friday at the football practice field at Terrell High School.

There are other fundraisers in the works that will be announced at a later date, Powder Puff Chairman Katrina Christeson said.

The annual Powder Puff Football game will be 5 p.m. Friday at the Terrell High School football practice field. It will benefit Athletics Assistant Lucy Hessel in helping her get back on her feet.

The girls from the junior and senior glass will face each other in a flag football game. The senior football players will be coaching the respective squads.

The boys from both classes will be on The Drill Teams. The event is primarily student run.

The admission will $2-3 at the door on Friday night.

15-4A Baseball playoffs rolling on

Three District 15 baseball teams remain alive in the Class 4A playoffs as they continue on this weekend.

District champion Mesquite Poteet defeated Pflugerville Connally 3-0 in a one game playoff on Thursday.

The Pirates will play Whitehouse in the 3rd Round this weekend.

Forney will play Hallsville in a best of three format this weekend. Game 1 will be 7 p.m., Thursday in Forney.

Game 2 will be 1 p.m., Saturday at Hallsville with the if necessary Game 3 30 minutes after Game 2.

The district's hottest team is Waxahachie and they will face Sherman this weekend. The Indians defeated Poteet on the last night of the regular season just to reach the playoffs. The win snapped Poteet's 59 game district win streak.

Former THS Star Smith named ASC All Conference

Former Terrell baseball star Logan Smith has been named to the American Southwest Conference East Division First Team.

Smith, last season's ASC East Freshman of the Year, is making his second consecutive appearance on the East Division First Team as an outfielder.

Smith was the ASC leader with 20 stolen bases. It was also his second consecutive season with at least 20 steals. His 28 runs scored were also third on the team.

Smth, who started all 40 games this season, hit .310 on the season with six doubles and 12 RBI's.

Former THS baseball players Chuck Daugherty, Barrett Calverly and Jeremy Ringo also play at LeTourneau.

North Forney Softball Schedule Set

The North Forney Lady Falcons will play Paris North Lamar in a best of three series beginning Thursday night in the 3rd Round of the Region II 3A Playoffs.

Game 1 will be 7:30 p.m., Thursday at North Forney.

Game 2 will be 7:30 p.m., Friday at Paris North Lamar.

Game 3, if necessary, would be Saturday in McKinney.

The Lady Falcons reached the 3rd round with a 2-0 series win over Longview Spring Hill last weekend.

We Messed Up

An early voting breakdown listed in the Thursday print edition of The Terrell Tribune is incorrect.

Through Wednesday, 397 ballots had been cast in the joint City of Terrell and Terrell ISD election. Of that number, 16 had been cast by Terrell ISD voters who live outside the city limits all others were cast by voters within the city limits. It had been previously reported that through Tuesday only 9 voters had cast ballots in the TISD election. That number is an error. TISD votes and city rental integrity ordinance votes within the city limits are included in the combined number (397).

The Tribune regrets the error and any confusion it may have caused.

Early voting is being held in council chambers of Terrell City Hall, 201 East Nash St., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 2, 3, 4, 6, and 9. Early voting also will be held at city hall from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 5 and 10.

On the city ballot will be a decision as to whether or not to approve Ordinance No. 2457, better known as the Rental Integrity Ordinance.

The Terrell ISD ballot features a race between incumbent Ann Kines McDonald and challenger Carol Keto.

Friends Rally For Lucy

Friends of Lucy Hessel, a popular Terrell High School staff member who lost all her belongings in a home fire on April 4, will be sponsoring a couple of events to help her get back on her feet.

Up first, a Terrell Can 4 Lucy Garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 in the covered parking area the main branch of ANB on Moore Avenue. If you have anything to donate for this sale, email 4lucyh@gmail.com or call Abbie, 972-551-2455, or Mary, 214-801-4717.

NFHS Softball Playoff Schedule Set

The North Forney Girls Softball team will play Longview Spring Hill in a best of three format in the Area round of the playoffs.

The first game will take place 7 p.m. Thursday at North Forney. The second game will take place 7 p.m. Friday at Spring Hill High School.

The "if necessary" game will take place 2 p.m. Saturday at Van High School.

District 15 baseball seedings set

Despite playing 16 district games during the regular season, a one game playoff was needed to determine seedings for the District 15 baseball playoffs.

First, Waxahachie made the three-team playoff with Forney and Red Oak by virtue of an improbable 4-3 victory over district champion Mesquite Poteet on Friday night. The victory also snapped the 59 game district winning streak for the Pirates.

The victory also meant the Indians were tied with Forney and Red Oak at 11-5 in the district. The three team playoff took place Saturday with Forney defeating Red Oak 4-3. Red Oak then defeated Waxahachie to secure the three seed.

Forney will be the number two seed while Waxahachie will be the four seed.

New Regional Track Meet Schedule

The Regional Track Meet schedule has been revised because of the wet weather expected to continue throughout Monday.

The Triple Jump, originally slated for 12 p.m. today, has been pushed back to 2 p.m. Monday. Tiara Hill will be competing for Terrell in that event.

The 400m Prelims featuring Carnell Horn will go off 7:25 p.m. Monday. The Finals are still scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Tuesday.

The Discus, Long Jump and Shot Put have all been rescheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday. Lauren Randolph will compete for Terrell in the Discus and Shot Put. Tiara Hill will compete in the Long Jump for Terrell.

The Regional Track Meet or the Clayton Jones Relays are taking place at the University of North Texas in Denton.

New Restaurant

We have another new eatery in town as Las Brisas opens today. The new restaurant is in the spot formerly occupied by Acapulco. (1744 N. Frances St., where Town North meets Frances)

Along with Tex-Mex faire, new owner Rene Barradas is most proud of his seafood offerings. He said to try the Shrimp a la Diabla.

THS Baseball Wraps up Season

The Terrell Tigers baseball team wraps up the season 7 p.m. tonight at Ben Gill Park against Ennis.

It is also Senior Night as five seniors will play their final game for the Tigers. Cody Weishaar, Cale Wardlaw, Brian Speer, Billy Howard and Luis Muro will all be honored before the game.

Ironically this is the second different sport this season in which Terrell and Ennis have wrapped up the regular season.

In football, Terrell drilled Ennis 47-0 to finish 5-5 on the season while the Lions slumped to 2-8 on the season.

First pitch is expected at 7 p.m. at Ben Gill Park.

Regional Track Schedule

The Regional Track Meet gets underway Monday and Tuesday on the campus of the University of North Texas in Denton.

Terrell will be well represented with Lauren Randolph, Tiara Hill and Carnell Horn all competing in five different events for a right to got to the State Track Meet in Austin, Texas.

Randolph will compete in the girls discus 11:30 a.m., Monday and the girls shot put 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Hill will compete in the girls triple jump Noon Monday and the girls long jump 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Horn will compete in the 400m Dash with the prelims set for 7:25 p.m. Monday and the finals 7:10 p.m. Tuesday.

Boles Brothers Tourney Set for June 13

The annual Boles Brothers Memorial Golf Classic will be 1 p.m., June 13 at Buffalo Creek Golf Creek in Rockwall.

The event is a four person scramble in two different flights based on handicap. The two flights are Big Red and Bengal Tiger.

Entry fee is $70/player or $280/team. The fee inlcudes lunch, green fee, cart, dinner for two after play, range balls, tournament hat.

Hole in One prizes include: 2011 Ford Truck, $10,000 cash from American National Bank and a Riding Mower from Mitchell-Bourland.

Registration and money is due by June 9th without any exceptions.

Tigers upend Lancaster in Tiger Bowl

Lancaster-The Terrell Tigers defeated Lancaster 12-2 Friday night for their second consecutive District 15

victory on Friday night.

Cody Weishaar led the offensive onslaught with two doubles and triple for Terrell. Heath Hottinger hammered a

Solo Homerun to go along with three walks as well.

Dillon Patton tripled while Victor Andrade and Cody Patton each had doubles for the Tigers.

The 12 runs were the most Terrell has scored since District 15 play began in early March.

Tyler Horn earned the victory as he lasted four innings to pick up and Lane Jackson earned a save as he pitched the

final three innings effectively.

The Tigers will enjoy a week-off before hosting Ennis 7 p.m. Friday at Ben Gill Park in the season finale.

Ennis deals Terrell loss in finale

The Terrell Lady Tigers battled to tie the season finale against Ennis heading into the deciding seventh inning. The Lady Tigers came up short as Ennis scored seven runs to land a knockout punch victory 10-4 Friday afternoon at THS Softball Complex.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Terrell battled back with three runs to knot the score at 3 thanks to the top of the line-up.

Cheri Crutcher drew a leadoff walk then stole second base with no one out in the inning. Kaylee Jones, Taylor Garcia and Mary Carroll each drove in runs with hits in the inning.

Garcia got the start on the mound and threw three innings while surrendering three runs. Carroll finished the game on the mound for Terrell as she lasted four innings.

Terrell ends the season having won two of its last three games to close the season.

THS Softball wins back to back

The Terrell softball followed their win against West Mesquite with a 17-7 drubbing at Lancaster Wednesday night.

McKenzie Carroll got the surprise start and the victory on the mound as she threw a complete game.

Cheri Crutcher, Kelci Cheney, Taylor Garcia and Kaylee Jones all contributed to the biggest offensive assault since the first game of the Forney ISD Softball Tournament against Ft. Worth Wyatt.

Each of the four standouts had run scoring hits for the Lady Tigers, who captured their fourth district victory of the season.

Terrell will host Ennis 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at THS Softball Complex in the season finale.

THS baseball hosting Legends of Diamond Game

The Terrell baseball program will host their annual Alumni Baseball 11 a.m., Saturday April 30 at Ben Gill Park.

The game will feature players who graduated in odd years against even year graduates in a seven inning Legends of the Diamond format.

"It will be a good time to come out and meet past and present greats who have made THS baseball what it is," Terrell baseball coach Gage Davis said.

Admission to the even is FREE but donations will be accepted during the game.

Terrell hosts Ennis in the season finale and Senior Night 7 p.m., Friday April 29 at Ben Gill Park.

News/Observations from THS Baseball

Nuggets from my notebook during a wet, humid, long night at Ben Gill Park for a 9-6 Terrell win over West Mesquite:

* This was the Tigers best offensive performance from Terrell since a 10-0 win over Lancaster

on April 1. The Tigers scored 9 runs on 11 hits.

* Cody Patton had three hits which tied a season high for him. He also had 4 RBI for the Tigers. RBI have been a problem for Terrell this season since their best hitter Cody Weishaar has been leading off. Maybe Patton can be that run producer the lineup has sorely been missing for most of the season.

*Hunter Cheney came in and did a nice in closing the last two innings. A deep pitching staff is what carried the Tigers to the playoffs the last two seasons. This staff has been thin on arms but maybe Cheney can be a building block for the future.

*The future does look bright for Terrell as underclassmen Cheney, Heath Hottinger, Victor Andrade and Cody Patton all played huge parts in the win. All of them will be back next season to form a solid nucleus.

*The Tigers have played numerous underclassmen and gained invaluable experience in a tough district. The hope is that they can grow from this and go to the next level. If they do mature and grow from this experience then we could be talking about a playoff team next season.

The Terrell girls softball team had their District 15 game at Lancaster rained out on Tuesday night.

The game will be made up 6 p.m. today in Lancaster. The Lady Tigers are coming off a thrilling 5-4 victory over West Mesquite on Friday afternoon at THS Softball Complex.

Terrell wraps up the season on Senior Day 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon against Ennis at THS Softball Complex.

Tigers get back in winner's circle

The Terrell baseball had to endure a lot of things to get their first win since April 1 including half hour rain delay and blowing a four run lead.

All in all, the Tigers will take a 9-6 victory over West Mesquite on Tuesday night at Ben Gill Park.

Cale Wardlaw got the win as battled through five innings while striking out five as well.

Cody Patton had four RBI and two hits to lead the Tigers offensive attack.

The Tigers (7-18) get back to action 7 p.m. Friday at Lancaster.

Wind Troubles

Kennedy Elementary staffers had a unique situation on their hands Tuesday after a communication tower on the campus was blown into a precarious angle, resting against one of the building's classroom wings. The tower was not in use by the district and will be removed.

A failure at the base of the tower resulted in the tower leaning onto the building toward Rockwall street. If the tower had fallen any other direction, the damage could have been much worse. TISD Police and Terrell Fire crews are working to direct traffic in the area.

Students were removed from the affected wings of the school and administrators were working on revised pick-up procedures to keep kids and parents out of harm's way until the tower is cleared.

Weishaar catching fire again

Terrell centerfielder Cody Weishaar is starting to heat up again after brief slump by his standards.

The senior standout had four hits and two walk in four official plate appearances to raise his batting average to .423.

Weishaar had three doubles last weekend in games against Forney and Corsicana.

With three regular season games remaining, Weishaar has 33 hits in 78 official plate appearances. He leads the team in home runs with two and in triples with three.

The Tigers look to snap a six game losing streak when they host West Mesquite 7 p.m. at Ben Gill Park.

Halac steps down

Terrell High School girls basketball coach Mike Halac confirmed to the Terrell Tribune Friday night that he has accepted the same position at Clinton High School.

Halac informed the team Friday afternoon during a meeting at the school. In his only season at Terrell, Halac guided the Lady Tigers to a 16-11 record and narrowly missing the playoffs.

Halac built a program on dedication, intensity, hard work and toughness.

It is was not immediately know when the search for a new girls basketball coach will begin.

Halac came to THS in July 2010 from Garland Sachse High School, where he was an assistant coach on the girls basketball team.

Ready For Some Family Fun?

If for some reason you just haven't noticed, well now there are sure signs that this weekend is the 30th Annual Terrell Heritage Jubilee.

The event, which officially opens Wednesday, runs through Sunday. One popular feature of the Heritage Jubilee is the Family Fun Night at the carnival, which this year will be held from 5 p.m. to closing on Thursday.

Take your family out and enjoy some of the games and rides.

Of course, head back this weekend for the car show, health and business expo, barbecue cook-off, arts and crafts, book sale and tons of other fun stuff.

THS Athletics Update

The week ahead is a busy one for the Terrell High School Athletic teams.

The boys and girls track team will head to Lancaster for the District 15 track meet on Wednesday and Thursday.

The boys golf team will also travel to Lancaster for the District 15 golf tournament, which concludes tomorrow.

The THS baseball team (6-17, 2-6) will look to get back on the winning track as they travel to Red Oak (15-10, 5-4) 7 p.m. tomorrow for a district clash. The Hawks dispatched the Tigers 9-2 on March 18 at Ben Gill Park.

As of right now, the Tigers stand two games behind Red Oak for the 4th and final playoff spot in District 15.

The THS softball team travels to Corsicana 6 p.m. tomorrow as they try to snap a four game skid.

Spring Storm Blows Through Terrell

High winds, hail and heavy rains were all in the mix when a spring storm blew through Terrell around 2:30 a.m. Monday. The storm left a trail of damage in its wake, especially in the Elm and State street neighborhoods where some families are still without power.

As of 7 a.m., Oncor reported having approximately 92k outages in North Texas from this significant storm. There crews are in the early stages of assessing damage and making repairs.

Rough day for THS Athletics

The Terrell baseball team fell to Waxahachie 20-0 Friday night at Ben Gill Park.

The game was close in the fifth inning as the Indians led 3-0. After that, they turned on the after burners and left Terrell behind.

The Terrell Lady Tigers softball team fell to Forney 22-0 Friday afternoon at Ben Gill Park. The Lady Jackrabbits are the #7 ranked team in 4A and played like it today.

Forney scored all 22 runs in the second and third innings to cap a three inning run rule. The onslaught included 12 consecutive runs in the third inning.

The Tigers return to action 7 p.m. Tuesday at Red Oak while the Lady Tigers return to action 6 p.m. Tuesday at Corsicana.

Good morning,

Late today into the weekend has the potential for being active, weather wise. Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible late this afternoon and early this evening. Relatively quiet weather is expected on Saturday before the potential for extreme fire weather conditions AND strong to severe thunderstorms affects north Texas on Sunday.

OVERVIEW

A dry line has set up across western Texas today, roughly from Childress to San Angelo. This dry line will move east this afternoon, allowing for a few thunderstorms to develop, especially west of I-35 and north of I-20. This afternoon’s thunderstorm potential is in the low probability, but potentially high-impact category. In other words, the possibility of thunderstorms is low, but any thunderstorm that does develop will likely become severe.

The dryline will move back into west Texas tonight as winds remain southerly. As a result, Saturday is expected to be partly sunny, windy, and humid with no storms expected.

A strong upper level storm will then approach north Texas late Saturday night, finally allowing the dry line to get a strong push eastward. By Sunday, areas west of I-35 will be under extreme fire weather conditions, while areas east of I-35 will see the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms.

IMPACTS

If thunderstorms develop this afternoon, the primary threats will be lightning and large hail. West of I-35 on Sunday…wind speeds are expected to increase to 20-30 mph, with occasional gusts to 40 mph. Along with the strong winds, the relative humidity levels are expected to drop below 20% during the afternoon hours. East of I-35 on Sunday…there will be the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms that would contain large hail and damaging straight line winds.

TIMING

If thunderstorms are able to develop this afternoon, the most likely impact times would be between 4 PM and 8 PM. Critical fire weather conditions are expected on Sunday between 11AM and 7 PM, to the west of I-35. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible on Sunday after 2 PM, to the east of I-35.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE

This afternoon: Confidence is low concerning thunderstorm development across north Texas. Confidence is high that if thunderstorms develop or move into the area, they would be severe.

Sunday: Confidence is moderate to high in the potential for critical fire weather. Confidence is low concerning the development of thunderstorms.

FORECAST POSSIBILITIES

The exact position of the dry line and the strength of the capping inversion make the thunderstorm forecast very difficult for this afternoon. This may be a case when only one or two strong storms develop near the dry line, move east, and then dissipate shortly after sunset. If the cap holds through Sunday, that could stop thunderstorms from developing on Sunday as well. If the upper level storm system moves a bit further north on Sunday, the wind speeds would not be as strong on Sunday, but that would knock the extreme fire weather conditions down to “only” a high category.

BOTTOM LINE

Emergency Managers, public safety and elected officials should monitor National Weather Service statements, outlooks, and graphics concerning thunderstorm development this afternoon. Fire marshals, fire departments, and other public safety officials west of I-35 should be prepared for at least high fire weather conditions on Sunday. Limited spotter activations and deployments will be possible this afternoon, and Sunday afternoon and evening.

THS Athletics Update

Friday promises to be a busy day for Terrell athletics as school winds down, the games are starting to heat up in playoff importance.

The Terrell baseball team will look to get back on the winning side when they host Waxahachie 7 p.m. at Ben Gill Park. The Indians blew out the Tigers back on March 8 at Indian Stadium.

The Terrell softball team will be back in action when they host #7 Forney 4:30 p.m. at THS Softball Complex. The Lady Tigers dropped a tough decision Tuesday night at Red Oak.

In other athletics news, Lady Tigers basketball player Tonisha Dean will be signing a financial aid agreement with Connors State College in Oklahoma. The ceremony will be 10:30 a.m. at The Complex.

No. 1 BFTS 70th Anniversary

THS Soccer shines with All-District nods

The Terrell Lady Tigers were rewarded for the their area round playoff berth with 10 All-District 23-4A selections. The Terrell boys soccer missed out on the playoffs but had five players earn all-district selections.

For Terrell, DFW scoring champion Mollie Tolbert was named Offensive Player of the Year for the girls in District 23-4A. Meanwhile Susie Williams, Donyell Prince and Ariel Marroquin, who led the district in assists, all were named to the District 23-4A first team.

Alex Strange, Devin Pitts, Malissa Beasley and Ana Andrade each earned second-team all-district honors.

Kendall Whitfield and Beth Rickman received all-district honorable mention.

Despite missing the playoffs, the Terrell boys soccer team was rewarded with eight players who garnered All-District selections.

The boys team was well represented as well with three first team all-district recipients in Josh Simmons, Dwayne Dowell and Andrew Camacho.

Jon Galan and Marcellus Hill made the all-district second team.

Gilberto Salazar, Girardo Padron and Lewis Davila were named to the All-District Honorable Mention.

Helping Lucy

Terrell High School students and community members are coming together to aid a beloved THS staff member and her family after a Monday morning blaze destroyed their home.

The fire was discovered around 1 a.m. Monday and quickly engulfed the home of Lucy Hessel, who serves as the secretary for Terrell ISD’s athletic department.

“One of her sons was coming home from work and noticed the smoke,” said Abbie Craven, a family friend who is helping organize benefit efforts. “With the high winds, there was nothing they could do to save their home.”

According to Craven, Hessel and her two sons — ages 19 and 25 — attempted to salvage what they could, photo albums and family treasures, but for the most part were left with nothing.

“What we’re trying to do now is get them what they need to get them back on their feet,” Craven said.

According to Craven, an e-mail account, 4lucyh@gmail.com, has been established for people wanting to offer assistance. In addition, a benefit account is being established at American National Bank in Terrell.

TVEC Power Outages

Just got this from the Trinity Valley Electric Company office:

As many as 6000 members in the western portion of TVEC’s service area may experience a temporary power outage today as the co-op’s power supplier makes emergency repairs to portions of their system.

Members living in the Terrell, Forney, Crandall and Kaufman areas could be affected by the repairs. The outage should last approximately 30 minutes.

Poteet downs Terrell in five innings

The Mesquite Poteet Pirates showed once again why they are the class of District 15 as they blanked Terrell 10-0 Tuesday night at Poteet High School.

The Pirates struck for three first innings runs and six third inning runs to make it 10-0 after three innings.

Cale Wardlaw got the start on the mound and took the loss for Terrell. The senior right-hander was also the only Tiger to reach base when he reached on a fifth inning error.

The Tigers will host Waxahachie 7 p.m. Friday night at Ben Gill Park.

This Friday, Terrell's Tonisha Dean is expected to sign a letter of intent to play basketball with Connors State College in Warner, Okla.

Dean, the 2011 District 15-4A Offensive Player of the Year, will sign her letter of intent at 10:30 a.m. in the Terrell Athletic Complex.

Getting Some Attention

Over on the Texas Tribune, they've released an early list of who to watch and who to watch out for in the Texas Legislature this session. Both of Terrell's legislative representatives — State Sen. Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) and State Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Terrell) — earned positive reviews.

The Tribune listed Deuell among the "best" of 2011 and Gooden as one of the promising freshmen to watch.

Tigers baseball falls at Ennis

ENNIS — The Terrell Tigers saw their winning streak end when they fell at Ennis, 9-3, on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers struck first in the game as they scored a pair of runs in the first inning. The first run was scored on a suicide squeeze and the second one was scored on a ground out.

After Ennis scored a run in the bottom of the first to make 2-1, the teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning.

That is when Ennis caught fire for six runs to make 7-2 after four innings. In the inning, Terrell issued three walks and also make three errors.

Tyler Horn took the loss for Terrell but pitched pretty well, according to Terrell baseball coach Gage Davis.

"If we can eliminate the one big inning, we would be fine," Davis said. "We outplayed them for six innings of the game."

Terrell travels to Mesquite Poteet 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Terrell High School baseball team notched their first District 15-4A victory with a 7-3 win over West Mesquite on Tuesday.

Cody Weishaar doubled on the game's first pitch and scored two batters later to give the Tigers the lead. Terrell never trailed in the game.

Soccer Leftovers

Heading into this season, THS girls soccer coach John Lantrip liked his squad but knew he needed some people to step up.

Lantrip told me in December he thought Mollie Tolbert would be able to help out but he did not think she would lead the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in scoring with 33 goals. Lantrip also knew Ariel Marroquin was going to contribute as well but did not know she would lead DFW in assists.

"To have two young ladies near the top of the DFW scoring chart, have several young ladies play strong defense and to have several freshman play key roles led to all of the success this season," Lantrip said.

One of the freshmen who came of age was goalie Kendall Whitfield. She saw action in the pre-season to give UT-Tyler signee Alex Strange a break and the freshman gained invaluable experience.

When Strange went down with a separated shoulder Feb. 22 at Mesquite Poteet, Whitefield was thrust into the starring role. The freshman did anything but disappoint.

She had five straight saves in a shootout victory over Kaufman on March 8 and never looked back. She was brilliant in Tuesday's area round playoff loss to Rockwall.

The lone goal surrendered was a double-overtime penalty kick that went off her outstretched fingertips into the goal.

Losing 12 seniors off a talented squad from 2010, most people thought the Lady Tigers would take a step back in 2011. They did anything but that as they finished with a 16-8-1 record, good enough for third place in district and a playoff berth against Rockwall.

The future is indeed bright with so many underclassmen coming back but the work of seniors Malissa Beasley, Susie Williams and Strange cannot be overlooked as well.

"Anyone who was at the game on Tuesday night saw a bunch of young ladies from THS play their hearts out and all the fans should be proud of them and they represented their school with pride," Lantrip said.

THS Softball looks to extend streak

The Terrell High School softball team will look to extend their District 15 winning streak to three games when they travel to Ennis 7 p.m. tonight.

Ennis has lost eight of ten games and stands 5-8 overall. The Lady Tigers are playing their best ball of the season as they defeated West Mesquite and Lancaster.

They are making plays in the field which had caused them some trouble earlier in the season. Terrell softball coach John Abate has said his team is making progress and learning to win games.

The offense has also come around as they have averaged over 8 runs/gm during the streak. The return of Taylor Garcia has taken pressure of the Jones twins and Kelci Cheney in the line-up.

When Cheney is on the mound, the Tigers may just need timely hitting and solid defense to win every game.

With Ennis on bit of a slide and Terrell on a two game winning streak things should be interesting tonight.

Due to a family funeral, U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling’s town hall meeting originally scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Forney Justice Center Municipal Court Building has been cancelled. The Terrell Tigers baseball team will look to get back to their winning ways when they host Red Oak 7 p.m. at Ben Gill Park.

The Red Oak Hawks come in scorching hot having won five straight and seven of their past eight contests. They are averaging almost six runs a game in their past five games.

The Hawks and Tigers have had several common opponents so far this season including Mesquite Poteet and Rockwall-Heath.

Terrell lost to Poteet, 16-1, while Red Oak fell to the Pirates, 11-1. Rockwall-Heath dispatched of Terrell, 11-1, while Red Oak fell to the Hawks, 9-8.

If the Tigers were looking for a break in the schedule, they will not get it with a red hot Red Oak coming to town.

Southwestern Christian College is working to obtain a corporate grant from Home Depot's "Retool your School" program.

SwCC hopes to win the major project grant of $50,000 to "Green Up" the Mary Carpenter Hall dormitory, including a new roof, plumbing, electrical and landscaping upgrades. The school is also competing for one of 10 $10,000 minor project grant for campus landscaping upgrades.

The Terrell ISD board held a marathon session Tuesday, hearing presentations by each of the three finalists for the district’s athletic director/head football coach position, but a final decision is not expected until next week.

Danny Edelman from Arlington Sam Houston High School, Scot Hafley from Haltom City and Darrell Jordan of La Marque all made their case to take the position Chris Gilbert vacated last month.

So...once again...the waiting game is on.

Now we have confirmation from TISD... we will update this story with information about the three candidates throughout the day and in Thursday's Tribune.

The board will meet at 5 p.m. today for a closed session to hear presentations by the finalists.

The latest rumor making its way around is that an e-mail went out to La Marque ISD staff today that Darrell Jordan is one of the three finalists for the Terrell ISD job

Terrell ISD officials have yet to release the names of their top 3 finalists for the job. The board is set to meet Tuesday to discuss the job, which has been vacant since Chris Gilbert accepted a position with Lancaster ISD.

Jordan led the La Marque Cougars to the Class 4A, Division II state finals in 2010. La Marque went 3-6 and 4-6 in Jordan's first two seasons at that school. In addition to Terrell, he also has been linked to a job opening at La Cueva (NM) High School.

Jordan was offered a contract extension with La Marque after guiding the program to an 11-4 mark and the Cougars' first trip to the state finals since 2006. He reportedly has not signed that extension.

Softball-Lost to Greenville 12-5 and beat Scurry Rosser 5-4. Plays Kaufman 12 p.m. today.

Baseball-Lost to Dallas Byron Nelson 6-1, defeated Dallas Christian 7-4. Plays Denison in 5th place game of Jesse Cummings Invitational.

Softball Update

The Terrell High School softball team played their first two games to a draw in the Wills Point Tournament against Kaufman and Wills Point.

In game one, the Lady Tigers enjoyed a 3-0 lead but could not hold it. Kaufman scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score.

The game ended in a 3-3 tie because of a 90 minute time limit instituted during tournament play.

In game two against Wills Point, Terrell once again started quickly as they raced to a 3-1 third inning lead but could not hold it.

Wills Point scored two runs in the fourth inning tie the score at three apiece.

The game was also called because of the time limit instituted during tournament play.

Terrell will look to get back on the winning track 1:15 today against Greenville in game three and 3 p.m. against Scurry Rosser.

TISD narrows AD search

The Terrell ISD board has narrowed their search for a new athletic director and head football coach to three candidates, but they have not yet released the names of the finalists.

"We have told them that they need to inform their district because we will be calling references, but we want to give them the opportunity to have the conversation," said TISD Human Resources Director Stacey Ellis. "We will publicly release those names on Wednesday."

Ellis said 42 candidates applied for the position. A committee of board members and administrators selected 11 for interviews over the last two weeks, but two of those candidates withdrew.

Boys Basketball All-District Awards

The Terrell Runnin' Tigers were well represented on the All-District team, which was released this week. Terrell placed two players on the squad.

Jherrod Stiggers was named District 15 Offensive MVP. The University of Houston signee led the team in scoring at 18.4 points/game. The total was also good for third in the district behind Jordan Mason of Ennis and Forney's Derrick Fain.

Senior two guard Tavian Henderson was named to the first team after leading the team in scoring in the first quarter of the season.

The Tigers finished with a losing record on the season after starting the season five of their first six games. They also had six district losses by less than 20 points combined.

Wills Point Tournament Schedule

The Terrell Lady Tigers softball team will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to the Wills Point ISD softball tournament this weekend.

Terrell will open up action 3 p.m. Thursday against Kaufman. They will play again at 4:45 against the host school Wills Point.

On Friday, the Lady Tigers will play 1:15 p.m. against Greenville.

On Saturday, Terrell will close tourney play 10:45 a.m. against Caddo Mills.

The Lady Tigers currently stand 0-2 in district play and 3-5 overall.

Jesse Cummings Invitational Schedule

The Terrell High School baseball team will look to rebound from Tuesday's loss to Mesquite Poteet when they travel to the Jesse Cummings Invitational, in Corsicana this weekend.

Terrell opens tournament play 9 a.m. Thursday against Grapevine Faith. The Tigers also play Denison 11:30 a.m. Thursday as well.

Friday brings another doubleheader with Byron Nelson at 2 p.m. and Dallas Christian at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday's opponent will be determined from seeding from the first four games.

The three day tournament, Thursday through Sunday, includes Corsicana, Grapevine Faith, Argyle, Keller Timbercreek, Dallas Christian, Terrell, Byron Nelson and Denison.

Athletics Update

It was a rough night for THS athletics as the baseball team and both soccer teams fell Tuesday night.

Mesquite Poteet run ruled Terrell 16-1 in five innings. The Pirates enjoyed a 5-0 lead after a half inning and never looked back.

The girls soccer fell to Forney 7-1 Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium. Things started off well for Terrell as Mollie Tolbert scored less than three minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Forney scored seven straight goals after that to take control of the game.

The Terrell boys soccer team dropped a big district contest 5-1 to Forney Tuesday night at City Bank Stadium.

Free pancakes, great cause

The Terrell location of the International House of Pancakes is going to be busy today serving up free short-stacks of pancakes. Nationally, the event serves as a fundraiser for Children's Miracle Network affiliated hospitals. In the Dallas area, the money is directed to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

THS girls soccer faces challenge

The Terrell High School girls soccer team faces a crucial district battle at 7 p.m. against Forney.

For the girls, it is a rematch of a heated affair that took place Feb. 14 in Forney. The Lady Jackrabbits prevailed 3-0 but the game was closer than the score would indicate.

The game remained scoreless until five minutes before halftime when Forney turned it on. The shorthanded Lady Tigers were playing without leading Mollie Tolbert and Ali May, who was lost after just five minutes.

They will be shorthanded tonight as well. Terrell could be without the services of goalie Alex Strange, who is out with a a shoulder injury suffered against Mesquite Poteet.

Tonight should be more interesting as Tolbert and May will be back in the fold and the game is in Terrell.

That would make things more difficult but not impossible given the stellar play of freshman Kendall Whitfield, who recorded a shutout against Crandall on Friday night.

In a game where emotions are sure to run high, the Lady Tigers must keep their composure better than they did in Forney. THS soccer coach John Lantrip has stressing the importance to his team ever since the last meeting.

If they do, they may just be talking about an invaluable district victory for a young team.

Baseball Update

The Terrell High School baseball team finished up action in the Benny Jones Invitational this weekend against Mesquite Horn.

The Tigers defeated Horn in Game 1 12-10 behind Brandon Martin's solid starting pitching and two hits at the plate.

Lane Jackson gave the Tigers the lead for good with a bases loaded double that cleared the bases and gave Terrell a 7-5 sixth inning lead. The Tigers never reliquished that lead.

Jackson also came into close things out on the mound as he pitched the final inning for the victory.

The Tigers fell to Horn 17-2 in the final game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon. The think Tigers pitching staff went with Victor Andrade in the final game.

Scheduling Note: The JV baseball game has been moved to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow against Mesquite Poteet at Ben Gill Park. The varsity game will follow at 7 p.m.

In celebration of National Pancake Day, IHOP restaurants nationwide will offer each guest a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes on Tuesday, March 1, in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Shriners Hospitals and other local charities.
