TISD volunteer training tonight

Terrell ISD is offering volunteer training 6 p.m. this evening at Burnett Elementary. The training course takes about one hour. People who took the course last year will only need to submit new paperwork and background check forms.

The training is required for any adults, including parents, who want to volunteer or chaperone on field trips.

The next opportunity for volunteer training will be October 14 at Long Elementary.

Extra DPS for Texas-OU weekend

Texas DPS is going to be out in force on the freeways for Texas-OU weekenders traveling through according to the release.

Not that any Tribune readers would have anything to worry about of course...

Troopers increase presence along IH-35, IH-45, IH-20 for Texas/OU game

Travelers headed to Dallas for the Texas/OU game are urged to leave early and drive safe and sober. Additional Texas Highway Patrol Troopers will patrol interstate highways from Austin and Houston to Dallas, and from the Oklahoma border to Dallas.

Troopers will patrol IH-35, IH-45 and IH-20, and will be looking for drunk drivers, speeders, aggressive drivers and those not wearing safety belts. The increased patrols will run from Friday morning through Sunday night.

DPS recommends that travelers leave early for Dallas, whichever road they’re traveling on, to give themselves time to arrive at their destination safely.

For information on road conditions along either highway, please visit the Texas Department of Transportation’s website at http://www.txdot.gov/travel/road_conditions.htm.

DPS offers some tips for making the trip safer and more enjoyable:

  • Wear your seatbelt and make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly secured.
  • Drive sober.
  • Obey the speed limit. Slow down in bad weather and in construction zones.
  • Before you leave, make sure your vehicle is roadworthy. Check fluids, tire pressure, windshield wipers, spare tire and emergency equipment.

· In case of a breakdown, move your vehicle as far off the roadway as possible. Make your vehicle visible with flashers and other equipment.

  • Don’t travel fatigued.
  • Don’t give into road rage.

Directions To Friday's Game

It’s been awhile since the Tigers and Indians have faced off on the gridiron so here’s a reminder of how to get to Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie this Friday for the 7:30 p.m. contest.

Take I-20 West to I-35 South (left). Then take exit 287 towards Ennis (left) take exit 77 south (right). Last, take a left on Indian Dr., and the stadium will be on the left behind Waxahachie High School.

Another Sad Chapter

Just saw this reported on KRLD's website:
Wyndell Greene’s wife and their two children died the Friday before Memorial Day when their SUV was rear-ended by a big rig on I-20 between Wills Point and Terrell. The SUV exploded in flames and only Greene survived. His critical burns kept him at Parkland and, later, at UT Southwestern hospital in Dallas. But on September 3rd, he was allowed to return to his Frisco home where friends and relatives helped him observe his 35th birthday. But then complications cropped up and Greene died on Saturday, 15 weeks after his family was killed.

An 88-yard touchdown scamper by Shea South in the opening minutes of Friday's nights District 15-4A opener was the only time the Terrell Tigers would reach the end zone in a 17-6 loss to Mesquite Poteet.

Here are some shots from the game:

Holly Debusk sent us this photo of what she saw as she drove through the storms yesterday. Thanks for sharing, Holly

"I was traveling east on I 20 when a tornado came or high winds not sure what it was but here is a photo I took with my phone."

Quite A Night

Severe storms spawned tornadoes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Wednesday evening. One even crossed over into western Kaufman County. Fortunately, the most severe weather missed our area.

We did get some heavy rains and some high winds. North Texas was set to remain under a tornado watch until after midnight.

If you got any storm damage at your home or if you happened to get photographs of the severe weather on your evening commute, let us know.

Snow To Be Honored On ESPN2

We got word today that tonight at 6 p.m. on ESPN2, Terrell's Randy Snow will be honored posthumously as part of U.S. Open coverage.

As one local recently put it, "Randy was a remarkable athlete and a fine human being."

Terrell should be honored to call him one of our own.

Revisiting Friday night..

Friday night's Tiger win over Greenville may be just what the doctor ordered with such a short pre-district schedule.

Let the celebration continue...

District play starts Friday with Mesquite Poteet coming to town.

Schedule Change

According to Lucy Hessel at the Terrell ISD athletic complex, a scheduling conflict in Mesquite means the Terrell Tiger freshman football team will play its game at Herman Furlough Middle School this Thursday.

Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

Looks like a great night for football! Go Tigers!

Spirited decorations

We spied former Tiger player Justin Johnson and former Tigerettes Brittany Brown, Alex Cockrill and Bethany Patton decorating Memorial Stadium for tonight's home opener against Greenville.

See you at the game.

The Tiger flag is flying...

Last year we had inquiries about where to get a tiger paw flag like the one we fly on Fridays at the Tribune.

While I'm not sure where this one came from, there are several flag vendors on the internet that will make custom designs. This site has small "boat flags" with a nice design.

Lady Tigers Volleyball is in Ennis tonight, and Greenville comes to town for the Tigers home opener at 7:30. Go Tigers!

Goofing around...

Had some fun getting quick group shots of THS volleyball squads this afternoon. The varsity team has a lot of personality on the squad...

THS volleyball plays in Ennis tomorrow night, starting with Varsity at 5:30.

Good luck to our JV and Freshman football teams playing in Greenville tonight.

Evening thunderstorms

I hope everyone is indoors and able to enjoy the nice rolling thunderstorms going through the area. On the drive home this evening I enjoyed quite a natural fireworks display and stopped to take some long-exposure photos through the windshield... this is the most dramatic.

And this one had a little less intensity...

Stay safe out there everybody,
