Baseball Update

The Terrell High School baseball team finished up action in the Benny Jones Invitational this weekend against Mesquite Horn.

The Tigers defeated Horn in Game 1 12-10 behind Brandon Martin's solid starting pitching and two hits at the plate.

Lane Jackson gave the Tigers the lead for good with a bases loaded double that cleared the bases and gave Terrell a 7-5 sixth inning lead. The Tigers never reliquished that lead.

Jackson also came into close things out on the mound as he pitched the final inning for the victory.

The Tigers fell to Horn 17-2 in the final game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon. The think Tigers pitching staff went with Victor Andrade in the final game.

Scheduling Note: The JV baseball game has been moved to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow against Mesquite Poteet at Ben Gill Park. The varsity game will follow at 7 p.m.

THS Atheltics Update

Baseball: Lost 12-7 to Garland Lakeview
Boys Soccer: Lost 2-0 to Mesquite Poteet
Girls Soccer: Lost 6-0 to Mesquite Poteet
Softball: Lost 2-1 to Mesquite Poteet

THS boys soccer faces key game

The Terrell boys soccer team faces a big challenge 7 p.m. tonight when they host District 23 leader (17-1, 5-0) Mesquite Poteet at Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers stand 2-2 in the district and will almost certainly battle West Mesquite until the end for the fourth and final playoff sport in the district.

If the Tigers can steal a victory against Poteet, which up to this point has been easier said than done, they will go a long way towards making a mark in a crowded district.

Coach Joe Stephens said last week's bye was invaluable as it afforded time to rest for a banged up squad missing four starters.

It also afforded some time to tinker with different line-up combinations like moving freshman speedster Marcellus Hill up in the attack to create more scoring chances. The move paid off as Hill scored against North Forney and just missed on several other chances.

It should be interesting to see what the Tigers have come up with after a week off to prepare for the district's best team.

Lady Tigers face Poteet in key district match

The Terrell Lady Tigers face Mesquite Poteet in another key District 23-4A showdown.

Terrell stands 4-1 in the district and Poteet stands 4-2 in the district. Both teams are chasing Forney, who is 5-0 in the district.

It is also a matchup between two of the district leading scorers in Mollie Tolbert from Terrell and Kaylan Hunter from Mesquite Poteet. Tolbert leads the district with 26 goals and Hunter has scored ten goals.

Terrell High School girls soccer coach John Lantrip said focusing on Hunter will be the key for Terrell's success.

If the Lady Tigers can hold Hunter in check and spring Tolbert for several scoring chances of her own, then the Lady Tigers will walk out of Mesquite with an invaluable
road win.

Former THS star Calverley named ASC Pitcher of Week

Former Terrell High School baseball player Barrett Calverley has been named American Southwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Last week, Calverley threw a complete game, one-hit shutout against Arlington Baptist.
The freshman also had five strikeouts and only one walk.

Calverley was instrumental in helping THS reach the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Last May, it was his complete game performance against Cleburne that sent the series to the deciding third game. Cleburne ultimately won the game and series but it would have been much easier without
Calverley.

Rise And Shine, Terrell (2-22-11)

1. With 77 percent of staff participating in the survey, Terrell ISD got a predominantly favorable review from its employees, according to survey data presented Monday night at the TISD board meeting. Overall, Terrell ISD employees responded favorably regarding job satisfaction. They indicated that the most important aspects leading to their job satisfaction were: support from supervisors and meaningful work. Nearly all like the work they do, find their work meaningful and challenging, understand what is expected of them, and are satisfied with their job assignment. Look for a story in Thursday's edition of the paper.

Update: A Census Breakdown

Following up on my post from earlier, our man about Kaufman, Loyd Cook, came to my rescue with these Census figures.

Surpassing 100,000

Officials have been telling us for several years, that Kaufman County would surpass the 100,000 population mark once the 2010 U.S. Census was completed.

They were right.

While I'm still trying to track down information pertinent to Terrell, here's a nifty graphic to see how Texas counties have grown.

Baseball Update

The Terrell Tigers baseball team opens up the Gage Davis
era and the season with a 6 p.m. home tilt against Garland Lakeview.

After watching the Tigers scrimmage against DeSoto, it was tough
to draw any conclusions. The one I did draw though was that DeSoto
was one of the most athletic high school baseball teams I have ever seen.

They run the bases aggressively and they can also hit for power. DeSoto hit
two homeruns during the scrimmage.

Terrell is aggressive when they get on the bases because they may not
have the power other teams in the district pose.

I don't know how good Terrell will be right now, it is too early to say. They are still
developing a pitching staff and identifying an everyday line-up.

The guess here though is that they will be better in April than
they were in now and in March.

Softball Update

The Terrell softball wrapped up play this weekend with
two more victories in the Forney ISD Tournament.

Friday night they defeated Dallas Hillcrest 5-4.
Kelci Cheney had 11 strikeouts on the mound to get the win.
McKenzie Carroll had two hits for 3 RBI's.
Cheri Crutcher played strong defensively with a great line drive catch

Terrell defeated Wills Point 3-1 on Saturday morning.
Kelci Cheney recorded 13 strikeouts on the mound.
Kaylie Jones hit a double followed by Brooke Jones who also hit a double.
Kaylie Jones, Brooke Jones and McKenzie Carrol each recorded an RBI.
Kaylie Jones with an outstanding catch for the final out of game.

The Lady Tigers also fell to Azle 5-1 on Saturday afternoon
in the final game of the tournament.

Terrell went 3-2 over the weekend to improve to 3-3 overall.

The Lady Tigers open district play 4:30 p.m. Tuesday against Mesquite Poteet at Terrell High School.

TISD Trims List Of Coaching Candidates

The Terrell ISD school board will finalize the resignation of Athletic Director Chris Gilbert on Monday night, while the search for his replacement is well under way.

A committee made up of board members and TISD administrators has already been at work reviewing resumes to narrow the field for final interviews.

“We narrowed applicants to 11 and will interview all of those in the next two weeks,” said TISD superintendent Kelly Rodgers. “The candidate pool was extremely high quality and we are pleased with the progress the committee has made.”

In a special board workshop earlier in the week, Rodgers stated that he hoped to fill the position by Spring Break if possible.

Lady Tigers fall to Forney

Forney-The Terrell Lady Tigers suffered their first district defeat at the hands of Forney 3-0 Monday night at City Bank Stadium.

Playing shorthanded without leading scorer Mollie Tolbert and Ali May for much of the game, Terrell did not have the offense to keep up with a solid Forney team.

The Lady Jackrabbits scored with five minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Forney then added another goal 35 seconds into the second half for a 2-0 lead.

The lead was too much to overcome in this physical contest that had tempers flaring throughout the game.

Chase update

A police chase involving at least one Hunt County Sheriff's deputy and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers ended with at least one suspect being shot.

According to Terrell Police Chief Jody L. Lay, just before 3 p.m. TPD officers responded to the incident on FM 986 approaching CR 245, but it never came into the City of Terrell. By the time TPD officers were on the scene, the chase had ended.

"KSO (Kaufman Sheriff's Office) arrived very quickly, as well as a number of other DPS Troopers," Lay said. "The other agencies had the situation under control and TPD was not needed, so our units returned to the City immediately."

"The incident never got near the TISD, but both TPD and TISD Police were ready to take protective action should it have neared the campuses of TISD," Lay added.

We expect more information about this incident this evening and will update you when that happens.

FM 986 Closed Off For Chase

A portion of Farm-to-Market Road 986 has been closed off by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and other authorities. Apparently, there was a high-speed chase and the suspect is now in custody.

As we hear more information, we will update you.

Lady Tigers Remain Unbeaten In District

KAUFMAN - Terrell secured its third consecutive District 23-4A win Friday night, but suffered a big loss heading into Monday's showdown with Forney.

The Lady Tigers (11-3-1, 3-0 in district) used an aggressive offense Friday en route to a 3-1 win over Kaufman at Lions Stadium. Two of Terrell’s goal came off the foot of top scorer Mollie Tolbert, who unfortunately exited the game late in the second half when she received her second yellow card. The penalty, which was handed down for excessive celebration, means Tolbert will have to sit out Monday’s match against Forney, the district’s only other unbeaten team.

Lady Tigers cling to playoff hopes

Many people forget the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers had to win their final three regular season to even get in the post-season.

The Terrell Lady Tigers (7-6 in district) are in a similar position as they stand two games behind Red Oak (9-4 in district) for the final playoff spot with three games to go in the regular season.

Problem is, Red Oak holds the tie-breaker by virtue of their season sweep of Terrell. This essentially puts Terrell three games back with three to play.

It is all very simple, Terrell needs to win their remaining three games against West Mesquite, Lancaster and Ennis while Red Oak needs to lose all three games.

Tonight's game against West Mesquite should be interesting given Terrell's narrow loss, 59-57, to the Lady Wranglers four days before Christmas.

It was a game Terrell felt they let get away given the their three point lead midway through the fourth quarter.

West Mesquite stands 11-2 in the district and comes in humming having won six games in row.

It is pretty remarkable the Lady Tigers are even in this position given that very little was expected of them at the start of the season. This shows the excellent job coach Mike Halac is doing.

The Lady Tigers program is on solid footing and will only get stronger in the future as long as Halac is there.

Monday Athletics Schedule

After the a week in which sports stood still in Kaufman County,
the THS athletics are back in full force with games every night this week.

Girls basketball will host West Mesquite 6 p.m. @ The Complex. This will be a varsity only match-up.

Boys basketball will travel to West Mesquite for a 6 p.m. contest. This is also a varsity only contest.

Boys and girls soccer will travel to Crandall for a varsity only doubleheader. Girls will play 5:30 p.m.

Note: The girls game was scheduled for Memorial Stadium but was moved to allow the field to dry out for a busy week of games.

Wait Just A Minute...TISD Plans May Change

Changes in the weather forecast have led TISD officials to alter their announcement about Friday classes. According to TISD Superintendent Kelly Rodgers, the forecast now calls for a greater chance of snow. Officials will reassess the situation and make a decision about classes early Friday morning.

Regular Class Schedule For TISD

Just heard from TISD officials and here's what they had to say:

Plans for tomorrow are to have all campuses meet at their regular scheduled time. Unless, the weather changes and brings in more freezing rain, sleet or snow. If this happens, TISD will make a decision early Friday morning.

Rolling Blackouts Cancelled

Here's the latest from ERCOT:

ERCOT operations has cancelled the emergency procedures that began early Wednesday morning. The peak demand this morning was 55,460 MW (for 9-10 am) which did not surpass the new winter record set Wednesday evening between 7 and 8 pm.

“We are very appreciative of the sacrifices of those who were without power during the rotating outages, and we also appreciate the conservation efforts by consumers during this emergency situation, as well as the load resources in our demand response programs,” said ERCOT CEO Trip Doggett. “We also want to thank the media for their assistance in getting information out to the public about the need to conserve.”

“I also am very proud of the great work by the ERCOT operators in handling what could have been a disastrous situation for the entire state if they had not taken the quick action necessary to preserve the security of the grid,” he said.

“I also want to note the support and assistance we received from the transmission providers and generation owners and the Public Utility Commission,” Doggett said.

“With continued cold temperatures and snow predicted across the state, we ask that everyone continue to conserve their electricity usage until temperatures moderate.

And Yet Another Change

Due to the threat of inclement weather, some schedule changes have been made to the 5th Annual "Give Kids A Smile Day" clinic.

According to organizers, the oral health presentations will occur at Long, Wood and Kennedy elementary schools as well as Furlough Middle School as originally scheduled.

However, the free dental screenings and sealants for children ages 1 to 18 have been rescheduled for Feb. 18.

Another Schedule Change

FYI Tiger baseball fans, Jim K. has posted on the "Terrell Tigers 100 Innings Game" Facebook page that the game will get under way at noon Saturday instead of 10 a.m.

Get out there and support your Terrell Tigers.

Another Update From ERCOT

Just had this forwarded to me from Oncor Electric Delivery Area Manager Cindy Tayem:

Morning peak demand is projected to be more than 56,800 MW. Although immediate concerns for the possibility of rotating outages this morning are reduced, ERCOT will be monitoring the grid closely because additional unexpected major losses of generation could force operators to begin emergency procedures to avoid an uncontrolled statewide blackout.

The grid continues to have about 3,000 MW of generation out of service due to the effects of the extreme cold.

Rotating outages are controlled, temporary interruptions of electrical service initiated by each utility when ERCOT’s reserve power supplies are exhausted. Utilities/ transmission providers determine the location/scheduling of the rotating outages.

Rotating outages are the last step in a progressive series of emergency procedures that ERCOT follows according to market rules. We only call for controlled rotating outages as a final fail-safe measure to avoid an uncontrolled blackout across the state.

Additional updates will be distributed to the News Bulletins list and posted on the ERCOT website when we have new information.

Oncor: Conservation Vital To Averting More Problems

Oncor, the electric transmission and distribution company serving most of North Texas, is asking its customers to conserve energy in the next few days in order to help prevent more power problems for the Texas grid.

Since before 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, Oncor was one of multiple electricity transmission and distribution companies that initiated rotating, planned outages in an effort to reduce demand as required by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. Extreme winter weather caused increased electricity demand and several power plants to go offline making demand for electricity exceed supply.

“There is a delicate balance between power supply and demand that, if compromised, can cause massive, uncontrolled blackouts that could take days to restore,” Oncor Chief Operating Officer Charles Jenkins said. “The rotating outages ERCOT asked utilities to initiate today were necessary to prevent a catastrophic event. We will continue to work with ERCOT to restore this critical supply/demand balance.”

You can find more of the story here.

Rotating Outages Possible Tonight, Tomorrow

Just got this information:

ERCOT is asking consumers to reduce energy consumption during peak-demand times this evening until 10 p.m. – and tomorrow morning from 6 – 8 a.m.

The grid continues to have more than 5,000 MW of generation out of service due to the effect of the extreme cold.

Tonight’s peak demand is forecast to hit 54,900 MW between 7-8 p.m. The morning peak was 53,223 MW – with 4,000 MW dropped via rotating outages - at 9-10 a.m.

At this time, the forecast for tomorrow’s peak load is 56,800 MW for 7-8 a.m.

ERCOT’s current record for all time winter peak demand is 55,878 MW, which occurred on Jan. 8, 2010.

Rotating outages are controlled, temporary interruptions of electrical service initiated by each utility when supplies of reserve power are exhausted. Without this safety valve, generators would overload and begin shutting down to avoid damage, risking a domino effect of a statewide outage.

Local Store In The News

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States would like to see a Texas law prohibiting liquor sales on Sunday repealed.

Apparently, they've found a local store to tie into their cause. Find out more, here.

TVEC Announcement

Just got this from Jeff Jordan at Trinity Valley Electric Cooperative:

The Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has instructed electric power suppliers across Texas to initiate rolling blackouts. TVEC is currently conducting such controlled outages.

The outages are necessary to compensate for a generation shortage due to numerous plant trips that occurred because of the extreme weather.

These outages are controlled, temporary interruptions of electric service, typically lasting 10-30 minutes each. It is not known at this time how long the need for these outages will last.

If members experience an outage lasting longer than 30 minutes, it may be an unscheduled outage and they should report it to TVEC.

Expect Power Outages

The Associated Press is reporting that the Electric Reliability Council of Texas has ordered utilities to begin rotating electrical outages to compensate for a power shortage linked to the extreme cold weather.

The order took effect Wednesday morning, a day after an ice and snow storm blanketed parts of Texas.

Consumers and businesses are urged to reduce their electricity use. ERCOT had no timetable for when the rotating outages would end.

The ERCOT region includes Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, Abilene and the Rio Grande Valley. ERCOT manages the flow of electricity to about 22 million Texas customers.

Rotating outages are defined as "controlled, temporary interruptions of electric service, typically lasting 10-45 minutes per neighborhood."

Critical need customers, such as hospitals and nursing homes, are generally excluded from outages.
Power is out in downtown Terrell, hopefully just part of power company rolling blackouts.

Basketball rankings released

The new TPA boys and girls rankings have been released.
As usual, District 15 is well represented.
West Mesquite (18-7) is #17 in the girls poll. Terrell and the Lady Wranglers
were scheduled to square off tonight but that has been pushed back to
most likely tomorrow or Thursday.
Mesquite Poteet (23-7) is #18 and has beaten Terrell twice.

For the boys, #8 Ennis (22-4) is once again ahead of the pack. The Lions
are unbeaten in the district as well are a favorite
to make a deep playoff run. Terrell travels to Ennis next Tuesday.

Slip-sliding away

Most of the precipitation seems to have passed, but the road conditions remain treacherous and temperatures will be below freezing for much of the week.

As you can see, the slippery conditions are hazardous for vehicles of all sizes...
