Morning Update (11/18/10)

• A new attorney has been appointed by the courts to represent convicted murderer Martin McKee. Chris T. Souza, a former Kaufman County assistant district attorney, will represent McKee during in the 5th District Court of Appeals in Dallas. On Oct. 27, McKee was found guilty of the November 2009 murders of 30-year-old Fiona Olander and her 10-year-old daughter Korryn Threadgill. Judge B. Michael Chitty of the 422nd District Court sentenced McKee to life in prison without possibility of parole on the same day.

• The Friends of the Kaufman County Historical Commission will host the Annual Kaufman County Children’s Living History Day Fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 20 at the County "Poor Farm," 3600 S. Houston St. in Kaufman. The farm is located at the intersection of State Highway 34 and Farm-to-Market Road 1388, (the entrance across from high school). Visitors can learn about he history of the Kaufman County Poor Farm, people of historical importance in county history, view exhibits and participate in hands-on demonstrations. Families, students, scouts, home school groups, private schools, and youth groups are welcome. Admission is $2 per person. For information, call 469-376-4121 or e-mail – kchc@kaufmancounty.net.

• The Social Science Club will host their annual Christmas in a Small Town Home tour from 2 to 8 p.m., Dec. 4. Tickets are $15 each. Homes on this year's tour include the Merita Harper Home, 105 Walnut St., the Warren/Skipworth Home, 705 Griffith Ave., the Leigh and RB Pool Home, 307 Tower Court, the Cartwright /Hernandez Home at 501 First St., the Crofts/Abell Home at 311 Elm St. and the DeBrow Home at 605 Griffith Ave. Tickets are available at the Terrell Chamber of Commerce, American National Bank, Koffee Kake, the Terrell Heritage Museum and Remax/Landmark. The event will kick off with a Christmas Gala from 7 to 10 p.m., Dec. 3 at Shadowridge Farm. Tickets to that event are $75 and reservations are required. For more information, call Donna at 972-989-9415. The home tour will include a Gingerbread and Holly Christmas Shoppe from 1 to 8 p.m., Dec. 4 at the Tower Place Club House. Proceeds from the events will benefit Terrell civic and educational projects.

• A Terrell, Texas native is making the most of his time as a reserve turned starter for Northwest Missouri State. We hope to have a story in Tribune on Marciele Surrells soon.

• This U.S. Army story on casualty notification officers has a local tie-in as the reporter interviewed David McNabb.
