Morning Update (11/25/10)

Happy Thanksgiving! If you're going to eat too much, try to work in a few vegetables like Burnett Elementary School students did last week courtesy of Texas AgriLife.

• Don't forget: New Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 13 Mellon St., will host its annual community Thanksgiving Dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 25. Rev. C.F. Robertson. For more information, call Pat Ransom at 972-534-1919.

• Like most other charitable organizations, the Terrell State Hospital Volunteer Services Council is feeling the strain of tough economic times as they solicit gifts for hospital patients during their “Everyone Needs Someone to Lean On” Christmas gift drive. Contributions can be delivered to the Community Relations office on the hospital campus between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday or mailed to VSC of Terrell State Hospital, 1200 E. Brin St., P.O. Box 70, Terrell 751690. For more information, call 972-551-8639 or visit their web site, www.terrellshvolunteers.org.

• For the second month in a row, Kaufman County’s unemployment rate remains at its lowest level of the year, according to a report released on the Texas Workforce Commission. The latest figures reflect jobless figures for October. According to the figures on the TWC Web site, there were 3,926 unemployed county residents, with 47,698 employed. The 8.2-percent unemployment rate matches the same number the county recorded in September.

• Terrell native Brashard Booker, who now is a sophomore playing safety for Northwestern State, earned honorable mention on the All-Southland Conference team this season. Booker was second on the team with 90 tackles. He also had eight pass break-ups and two blocked kicks.
